On a night that seems endless, David, a Georgian man who works at the water reservoirs on the Basque coast, finds himself trapped in a silent routine that begins to be disrupted by Giorgi’s arrival. Meanwhile, in Tskaltubo, Georgia, Eteri leads a life made up of small gestures: she tends to her clothing store, rehearses with a theater group, and feeds the dogs that live in the abandoned sanatoriums. When access to those spaces is restricted, her daily life also falls apart. Separated by distance, both sense how their routines are slowly unraveling, as if the darkness enveloping one could reach into the other’s life.

“Akira grows out of a feeling that runs through all my films: the impossibility of returning home. Home is part of our identity: through its places, its people and its customs, we learned to recognise ourselves. Leaving that place means beginning to shape who we are beyond it, and that experience changes us in ways no return can undo. This is why returning can be so difficult: feeling like strangers there means losing a certainty that sustained us even from afar. The film confronts David with that fear and makes the journey back without him, exploring a loss of belonging that touches both those who leave and those who stay.”
